Projects

Classic Neo-Colonial

Brentwood, CA

On the heels of another architect’s elegant design, we renovated and added onto a 1930’s Classic Neo-Colonial Paul Williams estate that had originally belonged to Tyrone Power.  Although the site is now half the size of the original estate, it still allowed for an expansion of the main house and an extensive remodel in the spirit of the original design, along with a new pool and classic pool house pavilion.

Spanish Colonial Transformation

Brentwood, CA

The original home lacked character and a clear style.  We added 1,000 square feet and transformed this into a Spanish Colonial home. Rich terra cotta tile floors were extended through the main level and join the solid walnut floors at the stair where decorative Malibu tile risers meet the walnut treads, and a custom iron rail design extends upward.  Plaster corbels frame the new Entry portal and Moracean tiles give the bathrooms texture and intricate patterns of color. Custom Accoya wood doors and windows connect the interior spaces to the Spanish gardens and custom tile fountains.

Las Colinas

Encino, CA

This Spanish Colonial hillside estate was originally designed by master Architect Myron Hunt in the 1930’s.  We have provided three phases of remodel and addition over the years.  A small boarded up house on the property was transformed into  the client’s music studio and guest house in the style of the main home. The main house has been remodeled to be a more open plan with greater connections to the outside courtyards, patios, and new front terrace was added to connect the Entry and Living areas to the new covered patio off the pool. Care was taken to keep  the character and details of the existing Hunt design, while opening it open up more to it’s expansive hillside property.  A total trasformation of the upper level bedroom suites was needed and new Primary suite and covered patio off the pool deck was added with views to the city beyond.

Colonial Revival

Holmby Hills, CA

This classic 1930’s home by Paul Williams is a good example of his neo-classic style and for part of it’s history was home to Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman.  The remodel and addition served to keep as much of the great rooms and features of the original home, while making it comfortable for the client’s desire for a more open plan with greater connection to the rear garden. From the street, the gardens were enhanced with new landscape and hardscape, but the home facade remains largely intact by design with the exception of adding a window to a 1960’s addition which eliminated on the original balconies that we deemed Paul would have wanted to be there.  The formal stair hall, with it’s signature sweeping curved stair, is refreshed with black and white stone tile pattern and the original iron rail, low by today’s standards, is modified to current standards, while still keeping the original rail design intact.  Across from the stair hall is the fresh take on the Sunroom, adorned with large folding steel doors that open to a semi circle canopy with delicate iron supports,  designed with slender solid iron posts and details, characteristic of the 1930’s period. The upstairs bedroom suites and walls are all rearranged to meet the needs of today, but detailed with reference to the homes classic Paul Williams character.  An existing detached garage is remodeled into a two story ADU to look like the carraige house.  The existing 1960’s pool was maintained but remodeled by adding a spa and baja shelves within, and the rustic canopy structure transformed into a cozy garden pavilion.

Seaside Cape Cod

Manhattan Beach, CA

This Cape Cod inspired home has views to the ocean with details borrowed from the client’s former East Coast home. The painted brick and bluestone steps lead up through the front garden to the classic covered porch and brightly painted orange door.  Once inside a formal Entry Stair Hall opens to a Living Area where large French doors with transoms and sidelights connect to the views on the South, and the garden patios on the North. An open plan Kitchen and built-in Dining area offer a fresh take on colonial interiors. The large North facing windows of the open stair hall bring daylight into the home’s core and the landing serves to connect the bedroom suites.  A family screening room and guest bedroom on the basement level make generous use of the modest sized lot.  Painted brick, stained shingle siding, copper gutters, and divided lite doors and windows all help to bring a rich quality to this traditional seaside style.

Canyon Farmhouse

Los Angeles, CA

This traditional farmhouse nestled in a quiet canyon area of Los Angeles draws upon the farmhouse vernacular of early California including nearby Shadow Ranch and Pierce Point Ranch up the coast. Although this home is much larger in scale than it’s 100 year old precedents, featuring large open spaces for living and entertaining, the painted wood cladding, exposed rafters, covered balconies, deep covered porches, custom wood doors and windows, and outdoor fireplaces all conjur up the romance of a bygone era.  Painted wood interiors meet with walls of vintage owner sourced wall paper, adorned with vintage lighting fixtures, and door hardware sourced from Liz’s Antique Hardware.  The tiled pool bath is rich with bright colors, while other baths offer a more classic palette of white tile and carrera counters. A through pantry with stamped metal panels of a custom design opens to the farmhouse kitchen and family room, where large doors connect you to the stone pool deck and views of the hills and terraced planting gardens, orchards, and trails beyond.
